Rate (1-5) : ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() With Memphis, a bag full of soul, blues and rock ‘n’ roll, Heartland Rocker Bill Toms returns for a seventh studio album produced by Nashville veteran Will Kimbrough. As lead guitarist of his former band Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers, Toms worked together with Bruce Springteen when he produced one of their albums. The boss was quite influential as you can hear on “Memphis”, but in my honest opinion it are the blues tracks on this album that really makes the difference. Eleven self-penned tunes and one Earl King cover is what you get when you pick up Toms’ “Memphis” and as said above it are the blues tunes that make the difference for me. Songs like “I won’t Go to Memphis No More”, ”Misery” or “Somebody Help me” are drenched in the blues. Despite the name of the album and the southern touch of Kimbrough there is not so much twang on this album as one should suspect but you’ll be able to find some southern touches in many other aspects. Bill Toms says of “Memphis” it is his most ambitious project so far and somehow we are here to believe him. Toms will start touring the US later this month and Europe will follow for sure. By Mid September “Memphis” should hit the stores. Mr. Blue Boogie |
