D.B. Rielly : Live From Long Island City – Cd;Shut Up & Play
Style : Americana
Rate (1-5) :

If there is one constant fact that makes me long to se the next D.B. Rielly release (next to the music of course) it is the packaging of his albums. For his third album, a Live CD, he chooses to pack his album as a postcard instead of the usual CD formats. But as you can’t judge a book by the cover, you can’t judge a CD by it’s artwork, so we have to spin the artefact to be sure.

Live From Long Island City was recorded, last September, when D.B. Rielly performed live at the RaR in Long Island NY. The session we have here on the album is about 25 minutes long and contains ten tracks all of them self-penned. It’s not really a session but rather some impression of the evening, as the live tracks don’t come out as one continuous live session but rather as individual tracks. You get the feeling it is not a big crowd in the bar but it is certainly a very enthusiastic audience and Rielly is quite close with them. The music is a standard singer-songwriters material and shows us Rielly at his best.

Live at the RaR bar makes me think on the live sessions of Todd Snider, with the same humorous intentions and family tales. It’s fun to listen to the tales & jokes and in the meanwhile you have some nice music as well. And although you can’t take it for granted, but once again, you can judge this CD by the beautiful package.
