Rate (1-5) : ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() You probably remember the mid-seventies where key figures from big bands started to jam together & in the end recorded an album full of great tunes. These bands where called supergroups! Well somehow Runnin’ Wild could be described as a supergroup as well! Featuring Patrick Ouchène (The Dominoes), Koen Verbeke(Hetten Des, Sin Alley, Johnny Trash) and Jack Fire(3 Lost Maniacs, Wild Ones, but also Slim Jim Phantom, Tim Polecat, Danny B. Harvey and even Big Sandy) Runnin’ wild is a nice collective that is back together for what I believe their second album. “I dressed in Black Today” contains 16 tracks and simply rocks the joint if you ask me. The band takes on a couple of classics and features a majority of self penned tunes. Amongst them is the title song “I dressed in Black Today”. The tune refers to the tragic dead of Hot Rod Luke some time ago. A haunting tune reminiscing all the good times they had together. The gypsy Ice cream crime original done by Philippe Lafontaine clearly shows the craftsmanship of the trio. The gipsy jazz revision of this classic is astonishing fresh in style and warm in sound. “That’s what I like” is characteristic for the band as is “Guitar Breaker”. Both are great rockin’ tunes. Another interesting track is “Big Bamboo”. Original this is a fifties calypso tune credited to Mighty Panther but was reworked not so long ago by a guy called Mighty Sparrow. As interesting as Big Bamboo” is the jazz instrumental Jack O’ Roonie and ”Le jour Ou T’es Partie” original written by Jacques Duvall. Next to these outstanding tunes with interests far beyond the ordinary borders of rockabilly the album does contain some good rocking tunes as well. But it is without doubt that it is tunes like the ones mentioned above that define the album. I’m not bored with Rockabilly music or the scene at all but somehow I’m please to find out that there is a new injection in the music simply by taking an interest in other (original) roots styles as well. The Album will be presented to you on the 16th of February in Antwerp. Check out Drunkabilly Records for more info. Mr. Blue Boogie ![]() |
