Did you ever give it a thought what the sound would have been if Bill Monroe teamed up with Muddy Waters ? Well according the promo sheet from Hemifran it would have been pretty close to the sound you’ll hear on Cliff Wagner’s newest effort : Hobo’s Lullaby.

A brilliant mix between bluegrass, blues, country and related genres Mr. Cliff Wagner & his old # 7 Hobo’s Lullaby is a dream come true for every lover of roots music. Pleasing all kinds of listeners within the range of US roots music this band throws in a collection of fourteen tracks of which the majority is self-penned. The covers included here are not always the most obvious ones and this makes it even more interesting to spin this record a couple of times.

Opening the album is Shake it up, a Cliff Wagner tune, while I do love this track I like to proceed immediately to the second one! Honky Cat is a great and lively tune that turns out to be a cover from Elton John. While I’m not a big fan of the man, I certainly have to dig out the original once. Same old me is a classic country tune that is nice but doesn’t bring anything new to the scene. Castleneck however is totally different. Here the band combines southern rock with hillbilly banjo & mandolin and once again the band surprises us with their excellent ability to blend different genres into something new. “Don’t Think Twice the Bob Dylan tune makes a great bluegrass cut in the hands of Mr Wagner and band. Also very good is Rollin’ & Tumblin’ the Muddy Waters tune! The song gets and excellent rendition here and is a crossover of delta blues, hillbilly music and the original version. More classic country is found on What Part of Heaven, a great tune with an even greater sing-a-long quality. Beer drinking, foot tapping goatees and ropers this is your track! Old Fire spices things more up and even old-timers will have their 4 minutes of physical movement! Shaffertown Road II and South Bound Train are both worth your attention while You Might Be Right is a perfect rendition of the Billy Joel tune. Closing this great album is Carroll Country blues, a real traditional from years ago!

Hobo’s Lullaby is a country album, but it’s is certainly not a common country album! Old # 7 and Cliff Wagner succeeds in creating one moment an octane laden atmosphere while seconds later the band plays a country tearjerker only to return with a blues inspired traditional. This is the kind of album that you keep spinning for a long time!
