Hard Country from California, that is the best way to describe the style of David Serby! This is already the third album for David Serby, a hard working southern Californian, who made out of singing a professional career! Leading track “Get it in gear” is based on a rockabilly rhythm and immediately kicks in with a swinging mood! There is no way in stopping your tapping foot when this track hits the speakers and although the styles changes through the album most of them are vibrant tunes that invites for a dance!
The music always come with a twang and differs from the formula written templates that rules the Nashville sound these days! As one critic puts out nicely “…you can have your cake and eat it to…” “Chasin’ You” is a fine example of the aforementioned twang, but as with all great country performers his twang comes with a lot of soul. This is even more clear in “Honky Tonk Affair” a tune that is crossover of southern soul and country! The Honky Tonk balad “I’ only smoke when I’m drinkin” shows us that David Serby is at his best when staying put to his turf. “Don’t Even try” takes a bit further into Honky Tonk territory but with the “Grass is always bluer” Serby takes us to the real bluegrass sound! Closing down the album is the great country rocking “Go On and Cry”! Another great track that will end up on many hard discs for sure!
David Serby proves with Honky Tonk and Vine he is a great performer, but above all he proves that he is a great singer songwriter! All tunes on this album are self-penned and that differs from many of today’s Nashville artists as well. To complete the sound you hear on Honky Tonk and Vine David is backed up by a series of great musicians including Gary Ferguson (John Hiatt), Taras Prodaniuk (Dwight Yoakim) and guitarist/producer Ed Tree (Spencer davis Group). All this makes the sound complete and adds yet another album to the great legacy of Californian country Music!
