Presenting a greatest hits album is quite common for a band that is on the road for along time! This is often done to mask up the fact that the band is not ready to release a new album full of new songs! For the Hawks things are a bit different! To start with it’s not really a greatest hits! It’s more or less a compilation of songs that the band members find their best + some additional live tracks and one or two new tunes.

Many of these tunes should have indeed been gold! However when you are playing country-rock music in the new millennium that sounds like you have listened to much to Gram Parsons, The Byrds or any other psychedelic country rockers chances are small that you come home with tons of golden records! But apart from all that you get an album worth to have at home!

Full of lonesome harmonies, ass kicking bluegrass, lengthy phrases of steel guitar and driving rhythms that will make you instantly dizzy, Shoulda Been Gold 2001 –2009 presents a nice mix of their songs. “The Salesman” is one of those Bluegrass efforts that reminds me easily on those old sixties psychedelic country outfits. Texarkanada, takes on a more experimental approach in the opening sequences while on “Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulet” the good old Cajun vibes are brought in! “I See Hawks in L.A.” is the original Demo version of this tune that was one of the very first recordings the band recorded years ago! Recorded on a an ADAT in the living room of one of their friends this version shows us how the band evolved over the years. “Soul Power” and “Sexy Vacation” are two previously unreleased tunes form the band while “Raised By Hippies” is the track that reminds us a little too much to the late Gram Parsons.

Shoulda Been Gold 2001 –2009 is fine collection of heart-warming tunes from a band that founds it inspiration in a music genre that was very much alive about 40 years ago. Despite that, the band doesn’t sound dated at all, but as they say themselves, these tunes should have been gold, instead they are well hidden gems that we hope to uncover for you by presenting this band here for a second time on Billybop.
