A moment when there was nothing better to do! The main reason for this was because I saw the name John Batdorf, I remember that name from a previous album I received but didn’t reviewed it by the simple reason that I couldn’t think of anything worth telling about it! I’m talking about “All woods and Stones”, a kind of tribute album to the Rolling Stones, but in the most awful way you can think about it. From that moment on John Batdorf was history for me! The once great singer songwriter had forsaken everything he could and cursed himself for ever! Now that dull moment suddenly was there and I spinned that record (and some others) that were put away for that occasion! Shame on me! Bloody shame on me… “Old Man Dreaming” did not deserve such a treatment! This was totally different! Tunes like “That don’t Seem Right To Me” or the title track “Old Man Dreaming” are certainly worth a couple of spins! True the album is not completely my cup of tea but I do recognise good music when I hear it and this is certainly good music. Another tune I like to mention is “I thought I try a love song”. This one comes with lots of harmonies and a great sing-a-long quality! On “Ain’t No way” there are even some country/folk influences next to the close harmonies. “Don’t Tell me Goodbye” is a 100% Alt.Country outfit but it “Sixteen” that does the trick for me! “Sixteen is what I wanna be” and who are we to disagree with that John Batdorf, when you are forty years old but still feeling sixteen inside! The tune comes as an AOR soft rock song but honestly I couldn’t care less! This is really a good Americana tune. The aforementioned “Old Man Dreaming” tackles on more or les the same subject! “I’m an old man dreaming in a young man’s world” “Old Man Dreaming “ is the first solo album that I’m aware of from Batdorf in years! The man who took over the seventies singer songwriter music scene with fellow musician Mark Rodney and landed himself a major record deal with Atlantic seems to be back for hopefully another series of good records. “Old Man Dreaming “ is a good start and shows us that Batrdorf has not forsaken his old talents! Let’s hope for more great tunes and albums in the near future. Mr Blue Boogie |
