How far can you go to protect your own work? Dino Laurentiis the Italian born movie Maker did go pretty far if you ask me. In 1976 he started a massive advertisement campaign for his next movie, the remake of King Kong. This allowed many moviemakers from around the world to cash in on the project and to make sure they had their movie ready around the time King Kong should appear. I say should, cause D. Luarentiis hadn’t started yet on his movie. Queen Kong was already filmed and postproduction was finished but when the makers wanted to release Queen Kong, Dino Laurentiis went to court and the judge ruled that the movie was forbidden & banned because it was a parody on a movie yet to be made? It’s clearly that money was involved and the British judge got his share. Movies like the Mighty Peking man (from Hong Kong), Ape (from south Korea) or Yeti (from Italy) were allowed, but they were no match for the King Kong remake after all. The funny thing is, that the only country the movie was shown, was Italy, the home land of Laurentiis But enough about that other ape & his adventures, what about the queen herself? The Movie is of course a parody on King Kong, there’s no doubt about it and with a British cast, mostly coming from “Carry On…” & “Confessions of …”movies it’s must be clear what to expect. Let’s say this movie is a pre-naked gun comedy, whit spoofs to many movies. The Excorcist, Last Tango in Paris or even Jaws get tributes someway in this cult movie. The story is simple; a filmmaker is looking for the perfect male for her next movie & finds him in the person of the looser Ray Fay (Fay Wray was the actress who played in the 1933 version of King Kong). After some minor difficulties they travel to “Lazanga, where they do the Konga” in black Africa to start filming. However before their arrival the native (all female) guides start turning their heads & vomiting pea soup, a female jaws is attacking the ship and many other things do happen. When finally arriving in “Lazanga, where they do the Konga” the crew stumble upon a big man eating ape… the rest is history. Queen Kong is not a movie to wet you pants, but it’s certainly has its moments of shear laughter & hilarious comedy… a classic family movie for the not so classic family. more info on : http://www.dfw.nl |
