Among the many Bifff features for this years festival we’ll get Creep, a German, English co-production from debuting director Christopher Smith. Director C. Smith came with the idea while taking a ride on the London Tube. His train stopped in a tunnel for absolutely ages and it struck him… He was alone in the underground, completely helpless! When he mentioned the idea to Dan Films Producer Jason Newmark, Jason was impressed and asked Christopher Smith to start working on it.![]() The plot is about Kate, a young girl who takes the tube, because she can’t find a cab. Slightly tipsy, she waits for the next train, but drifts of to sleep… awakening to find out everybody is gone and the station is closed. Suddenly a train stops and she boards. As the only passenger, she is a bit nervous but when halfway the train stops in total darkness she ‘s sure she isn’t alone! Creep is a modern story of nightmare terror, exposing the extremes of raw survival, starring the German Franka Potente (Anatomy 1 & 2, The Bourne supremacy, Blow,…) ![]() For al those who have never had a horrible experience on public transport, this movie will help you to get your fears. Filmed on location in the abandoned & out of use old Strand station on the blue Piccadilly line, this is the ideal place for this psychological mindbender and manic monster movie. Next to the English shots, the crew went to Germany to go to that disused sugar factory, which has been used many times in other movies. Designer John Frankish (who worked on Thunderbirds) explains: The structure of that aged industrial building, and the rusted look we wanted, was there, without much extra work. The basic structures were here, so we didn’t have to start from scratch like in a studio. The factory has been abandoned for years & all machinery and furniture was moved out long ago, leaving a big empty square place, where you can move in a lot of interesting things or build great sets. Among the things that were build from zero is the corridor with a 100 metal locker doors. Christopher (Smith) wanted every frame to have doors, lockers or windows behind people’s head, so something could pop out at any time and make the audience jump! The best part of the movie was shot during the wintertime, when it was freezing outside, but all actors really loved working with Chris. Franka Potente let us in on some of her experiences: “I absolutely hate the cold, and dirt should never be this dirty even in Movie land! It was hard to keep our energy levels up because it seemed to evaporate into the tunnels. Then I’d look at Chris and he wasn’t even wearing a jacket! He was so wired and energised by what he was doing it gave everyone the lift needed to carry on despite the physical pain we often felt. And spending three days in the water tank in Cologne was no fun despite wearing rubber underneath my flimsy dress! But then being tense and tired was what my character was really all about”. She continues, “Chris even made us run up and down the tube escalators before each scene just so we’d look realistically out of breath. I was often too exhausted to feel like doing that but he was absolutely right because it added amazing truth to the work. I don’t think a casual observer would ever have guessed that Chris was a first timer as one of the qualities of being a leader is to listen and Chris certainly has done that with all of us”. Creep will screen at the Bifff festival on 19/02/2005 - passage 44 – 20.30h Creep will also be shown at AFFF on Sunday 12/06 and Tuesday 14/06 ![]() * pictures submitted by Belga Films more info on : http://www.creepthemovie.com/ http://www.bifff.org |
