Ghost
seen at BIFFF 2005

Last Saturday, march 12, Razor Reel went to Bifff to see the Ghost, (aka A Dead Friend) a movie directed by T.K. Kim.
"Ryung" or "Ryeong" is the original Korean title. This movie has been referred to as the best Korean horror movie ever made!

When the director Tae-Kyung KIM, showed up for an introduction he tried to say some words in French.
We couldn’t understand a word of it, it didn't even sound French, but he charmed the audience. Luckily, a nice lovely Korean translator took over and translated the rest of his introduction.
TK Kim wants the audience to think about his movie. Are having good intentions, well enough... Is it really enough, just thinking that you are a good person? With these and many other statements my fear started to grow that this was going to be to "Arty Forty".
But boy, I was completely wrong!

In the story, we follow the main character Min Ji-won, who suffers from amnesia, caused by an accident almost a year ago.
While the "new" Min Ji-Won is a shy person, who dislikes fish soup. We soon learn, that her past was totally different.
Before the accident she was the leader of a gang of four bullies. Through pictures, she learns about her 3 other "soul mates” and she wants to find out what happened to them. Whilst Min Ji-Won tries to unravel the mystery, her former friends are killed one by one.
Min Ji-Won has little time left to find out what happened to her and the mysterious Su-In.

A couple of days after the screening we at Razor Reel still are talking about this one. You might say we are easily impressed, but I'm assuring you this is not the fact.

After the movie we went to the Q&A with TK. Kim. According to Kim, he wanted to make a horror movie, that was creepy & eerie but wasn't full of blood. Only on 2 occasions you can see some blood in the movie, it's very relevant to the story and it's only a couple of drops. Instead of using blood, Kim used water as the scary factor. As far as I'm concerned, this is a real good movie, with some creepy moments but never really scary. As with many Asiatic movies, the atmosphere tenses you up and the water-theme is enough to give you the creeps. Of course there are some points of critic. The ghost resembles the one in the Grudge, way too much. The sound effects drift on the same soundscapes as the Grudge or the Ring. But still I think this is a very enjoyable movie. "The Ghost " was a Belgian premiere and is a part of the international competition, so Thumbs up for this one.
