Dario Argento is to Italian Horror what Hitchcock is to thriller & suspense. While Dario Argento is often nicknamed the “Italian Hitchcock”, he always stated that he is, in no way imitating Hitchcock. Saturday night I heard those same words out of his own mouth more then once. “I’m Dario Argento, not Alfred Hitchcock”. But with his latest movie (the first one he produced for TV only) he proved that he knows his classics in suspense and thrillers. With “Do you like Hitchcock”, he made a movie in that classic Argento style, but is build around some Hitchcock intrigues. Based on the story “Strangers in a train (1951)” and injected with some “Dial M for Murder” (1954) this new Argento movie is good to watch and does have some nice surprises along the way. The movie is an ode to Hitchcock but it’s not Hitchcock, on the other hand, it’s a bit light for Argento. There are no bloody killings, no blood dripping of the screen and certainly no gore effects. ’m sure that certain heavy Hitchcock fans will dislike this movie or that Argento fans will do the same. Of course you have take in account that this movie is specially made for the RAI (Italian TV). The movie has to be the first in a series of TV movies (not all made by Argento). Therefore it is done with a bit less gore then the usual stuff we get from him. The master himself is very friendly and nice man who knows how to entertain his public. Even after the screening, during the Q&A or during the signing session, he is still very polite and always in for a couple of friendly words. We also got to see the producers of the movie and actress Christina Brondo who joined Dario Argento in a Q & A. Next to Hitchcock, there are many references to other directors in this movie. You can see pieces of “Golem” and “Nosferatu” and there is talk about German expressionism as well. As Dario stated, “this movie is made by some one who loves cinema, for people who love cinema”. During the Q&A it came clear that Mr Argento wasn’t very happy with the fact that this movie is only released for TV (and later on DVD). He really hopes that “Do you like Hitchcock” will get some theatrical releases as well. Razor Reel can only support him You can see Do you like Hitchcock on AFFF as well on Friday 10/06 and Sunday 12/06
