The 1980 made horror movie “City of the living dead” (original title Paura nella citta dei morti vivanti) was made just after Zombi 2 and is even more gore then Zombi. With this movie Fulci finally became know as the Italian gore specialist as we know him today. While Zombi was full of exotic locations, City of the living dead takes place in a gothic surrealistic environment.
This little masterpiece kicks off with a priest who commits suicide in the small town of Dunwich. It takes place on a graveyard and by doing so he opens a doorway to hell. From now on the Living dead are here to feast on the living. They have to be stopped before all saints day! Meanwhile somewhere else a young woman with para-psychological powers is buried alive by mistake. When she gets rescued she tells about the city of the living dead and Father Thomas, the priest who hung himself. When they start searching for the town, the film looses all aspects of reality and becomes a feast of gore, blood & zombies. A girl gags out her own guts, a guy gets killed by putting a drill to the head and others die when their brain is ripped out of their skull.
If this is not enough for you, the gore fest serves impalement, bleeding eyeballs, scalping and other gore favourites. This is all very explicit filmed and the gore is right in your face. It lacks logic and structure and is often hard to follow. Yet it is a feast of special gore effects. This version is about 3 minutes shorter then the original one, it still is non-stop action, killing, zombies and splatter. Featuring Christopher George (The Heist, Exterminator), Catriona MacColl (The Beyond, The House Outside the Cemetery), Carlo De Mejo (Emanuelle in Prison, The House Outside the Cemetery), and Giovanni Lombardo Radice (Demons 4, Cannibal Ferox, The House on the Edge of the Park).
Released by DFW on May the 24th.
