Curse of the Komodo
DVD submitted by DFW
Curse of the Komodo is a typical monster movie as so many, made already. Heavily inspired by the fifties B-movies it holds some references to Godzilla & Dinosaurs Island (1994, by the same director).
The plot is not bad and the cast (mostly unknown actors) do their best in this over the top monster movie.
As usual the military is doing a secret experiment on a desolated island to enhance their attack strength. To do this komodo’s are genetically enhanced and grown to enormous but unexpected measures. At their best they are the size of a full-grown T-rex. As an extra bonus they leave behind a deadly venom.

When the army discovers that it gets out of hand, they recall the professor who started the experiment and order him to shut down the facility containing all the komodo’s. This is of course not enough for a good script and a handful of criminals are introduced. Believe it or not but these criminals on the run for the police crash land on the very same island as where the komodo’s live. If this not enough for you they befriend the professors crew and try to survive the night on the island!

Made in 2004, this movie suffers mostly from campy & cheesy out of fashion FX that would make many fifties directors proud. This is best seen in a scene where we see a side view of a komodo attacking a group of people. It’s so obviously fake, it becomes laughable.
As stated before the cast exists of a bunch of almost unknown actors, but some of them are worth mentioning. Tim Abbel (Helicopter Pilot Jack) is known for his cooperation in sexploitation movies like “Attack of the 60 feet centrefold (1995)” and “Masseuse (1996)” but moved on to some 'better' work in b-movies like “RaptorWe where soldiers (2002)” and “Gargoyles (2004)”.
Melissa Brasselle (Tiffany) could also be spotted in “Raptor” and did some stints in the TV version of “The wasp woman (1995)” and “Cyborg 3 (1994)”
Glori-Anne Gilbert (Rebecca) is the one with euh…the biggest assets. Take your DVD and skip to 27 minutes into the movie and you’ll know what I mean. She will also be in the sequel (no kidding) “Komodo Vs Cobra” and could be seen in the E independent Cinema production Vamps (2002). More sexploitation stuff you can see her in is “Countess Dracula Orgy of Blood (2004)” or “Sex Queens from cyberspace (1998)”

It should be to everyone that director Jim Wynorski devides his time between sexploitation movies, monster flicks & horror/sci-fi films, reusing his cast and own ideas over and over. This results of course in low budget B-movies. I myself found “The curse of the Komodo” a charming movie that did remind me of flicks like “The Giant Gila monster”, “Attack of the Giant Leeches” or “Attack of the crab monsters”. Not so much in way of the plot but definitely for the “(not so) stunning” visuals

Released in the Benelux on DVD by DFW early June 2005.
