Women’s prison Massacre is actually the second attempt of Bruno Mattei (“Zombi 3”, “Hell of the Living Dead”, “Calligula and Messalina”) to make a ‘women in prison’ movie starring Laura Gemser (Black Emanuelle) and her husband Gabriele Tinti. This movie was intended as the sequel to the 1982 cult-classic “Caged Woman”
This time Emanuelle doesn’t go undercover. No, this time she really went to far. Trying to expose a corrupt official, she gets caught and is sent to jail on trumped-up charges. Emanuelle and her inmates are more then once humiliated and tortured by the prison staff. To make things worse “Albina” (an inmate who tries to run the prison) finds an enemy in Emanuelle.
Bad becomes worse, when four men are brought to the prison. These four criminals just tried to escape from their transportation to a high security prison where they await execution. I no time, the four psychotics seize power over the prison and take all the advantages the situation has to offer. Most of the ladies haven’t seen a man for years and are more then willing to be the pleasure of these men. Yet, when the crazy, blood lusted death row inmates start their sick games, the ladies turn against them and blood starts to flow.
“Caged Women” had become a cult hit, so a second movie had to be made within the year. These movies have actually less to do with the Black Emanuelle movies, Aristide Massaccessi made. In fact they were much more inspired by the gruesome and gore movies that Jess Franco made on the same theme. But the presence of Laura Gemser gives these movies a lot more ‘body’, then they would have had without her. Also starring in Women’s prison Massacre is Franca Stoppi (“Caged Woman”, “The true story of nun Monza”, “Blue Hollocaust”), Carlo De Mejo (“The House Outside the Cemetery”, “City of the Living Dead”, “Manhattan Baby”) and Lorraine De Selle (“Canibal Ferox”, “SS extermination Camp” & “Emanuelle in America”), a real ‘genre’ cast.
The movies of Bruno Mattei are as always very sleazy and made for grind houses. Women’s prison Massacre is without doubt a very good example of the Euro Trash Bruno Mattei has (and is still) been cranking out. Watch out for some great gore moments. The Russian roulette is one of them, where Albina splats here brain all over the place. Or feel your manly hood shrink when watching the scene in which a young inmate takes revenge on one of the guys by putting a razor blade on a cork and inserting this in her vagina. It’s only moments later when she starts to seduce one of them. What follows is as bloody as you can imagine.
Bruno Mattei movies aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, yet his movies are to be seen as the prolongation of the older Giallo type film that ruled Italy once. This Women’s prison Massacre is rather enjoyable and mirrored the Black Emanuelle series but with a very gore bonus. This Schock-o-rama version differs from the one that was released early this year. It is now released as a 16*9 widescreen edition. An additional two minutes of missing gore, blood and nudity has also been added. As only extra there are some trailers available for other Retro Shock releases.
Here at Razor Reel, we do hope that Retro Schock-o-rama puts out more of the older Euro trash stuff in the coming months (and specially the Bruno Mattei films ”Nerone e Poppea” from 1981 and ”Caligola e Messilina” from 1982) but meanwhile pay them a visit at www.shock-o-rama.com where you can find some nice gems like Olaf Ittenbach’s :Premutos, Fulci’s Dead Fright and Gregory Lamberson’s Slime City among many other great movies.
