So, you want to see something different! You’re always complaining that Horror movies are dumb! You don’t think vampires, werewolves or witches flicks are cool. Well I have news for you. "Slayer" the first film by writer/director Ed Peduzzi could be the atypical horrormovie you are looking for. "Slayer" is a nice drama full of social engaged teenagers, with a clear view on the future and a distinctive mission to save the world.

Yes, "Slayer is a drama, but with vampires and their slayers! It isn’t the usual fight the evil story, and that makes it a hell of movie. Nicely filmed, with a clever story and probably shot on a shoestring budget.

On IMDB we got this subtle synopsis that explains enough to raise the interest. After witnessing a brutal slaying, a young college transfer student slowly discovers the unpleasant reality behind the vampire myth. As a clean up crew member for the slayer's work he becomes disillusioned with the romanticized aspects of violence, and learns that life is lived in a gray area far from black and white

In the first part of the film we follow Eric who witnessed a brutal murder in the woods. Instead of notifying the authorities, he starts his own investigation. He remembers the name of a 'janitor' service that passed him by on the road. Trying to get in contact with this service is really hard. Eric goes in search of their hide-out, which leads to him being captured by this group.

To his surprise, Eric is introduced to the gang and allowed to ask questions. Before he knows, he is part of this gang, which cleans up the dead bodies of vampires! This gang of thugs are a bunch of trained vampire slayers and clean-up crew. On one of the missions, Eric tags along, when things turn ugly, Eric is forced to kill a vampire himself, which gains him the status of slayer. Soon Eric discovers that there is nothing romantic about killing vampires. Because the vampires are more human then in the normal vampire tales, slaying them is more intense. However Eric has to set his reservations aside when a group of evil vampires turn on the slayers nest, a war is eminent, with an unsure outcome for each of them.

Forget everything you know about vampires! Silver bullets, crucifixes, sunlight, garlic or holy water isn’t scaring them of! Neither do they have supernatural powers. However they are for sure bloodthirsty humans, killing not only for prey but also for pure joy. The vampire myth is thoroughly shaken in this film and is totally opposite to the Anne Rice novels. The vampires (or Rips as they are called in the film) are rather marginal, no luxurious clothes, no leather capes or ass kicking babes, but creatures living on the edge of society.

An unknown cast deliver some fine acting. With some unsuspected deaths during the film and one or two twists, the film is surely one that I can recommend to all fans of the genre and beyond. Some scenes are truly intense (and I’m not talking about gore or horror). Take for instance the scene where the young Rose is going into the woods with Phoebus to go to the place where she was “born.” This is a well-developed scene as well as a nice form of character building. Filmed in a style that reminds me of modern day samurai films and alternated with a comic book style, including some animated scenes this film is in high need of a descent distributor that dares to look beyond the common vampire tales!

A well performed and good written story with a dark new view on the ages old myth.
