Original member of the Spaniels dies at age 71
BY BOB KOSTANCZUK Post-Tribune staff writer
GARY -- Opal Courtney Jr., an original member of the legendary Spaniels, was found dead Thursday in his Gary home.
He was 71. The singer's daughter, Mona Courtney, said her father died of a heart attack.
Part of one of rhythm and blues' seminal vocal groups, Courtney sang on the original recording of "Goodnight Sweetheart, Goodnight." An R&B hit in 1954, the Spaniels' lovely street-corner song is considered a classic of the doo-wop genre.
Courtney also sang on "Baby, It's You," a national R&B hit for the Gary-based Spaniels in 1953. The song helped launch Vee Jay Records, ... continue reading

The Mighty Quiffs – Ace Cafe Rumst 05/10/2008
Another one of those Sunday nights at the Ace Cafe, on stage this time, appearing for the First time at the Ace: The Mighty Quiffs. Been a while since I’ve seen these guys, and I must review my opinion of back then, this gig rocked. They had a little change in the line up: Mark Sprex is on Double bass now.
Most of this bands set list ( well actually the whole off it) consist of covers, some very well know, some a bit less, but that meant that even someone not into the whole rockabilly stuff can enjoy this gig, sing or tap along. They even did a few songs I would never suspect “ I’m on Fire”.
Of course a few Elvis songs passed the set, ... continue reading

Two Tons of Steel – De Gilde Oostkamp 3/10/2008
Last Friday it was time for this seasons First gig organized by our friends over in Brugges, on stage this time: Two Tons of Steel from San Antonio Texas. The name is apparently based on the nickname of a classic Cadillac car. ( in case you were wondering)
The music they play varies from song to song, sometimes more country sometimes more Rockabilly, but almost always packing a punch. Our own Mr. Blue Boogie check these guys out in Texas and brought them over ( well sort of, let’s say it took some hard earned cash and some things you might not wanne know about).
So back to the Gilde. By the time these guys were about to play, the place ... continue reading
