'THE WILDEST SHOW IN VEGAS!': Keeper of the legacy signs off Age and changing times catch up with lounge great and Louis Prima collaborator Sam Butera
Sam Butera contemplated the fact that the Golden Nugget is now owned by two guys in their 30s with an interest in the old Vegas.

"They don't know when the old Vegas started," the 76-year-old lounge legend says, a little dismissively. But then he flashes his famous ear-to-ear grin to add: "And it really didn't start until we got here. That's the God's truth. As God is my judge."

Few would argue that the waning days of 1954 gave rise to something special on the Strip.

The Louis Prima band, with Butera as his saxophone sidekick, gave Las Vegas a distinctive sound and a freewheeling, all-night image that still echoes  ... continue reading

Sam Butera, former Louis Prima saxophonist, dies in Las Vegas at age 81
Sam Butera, the hard-driving, hard-swinging New Orleans saxophonist who was Louis Prima's longtime musical partner, died Wednesday in Las Vegas following a long illness. He was 81.

Mr. Butera joined Prima's band in 1954. With singer Keely Smith, they built one of the most popular acts in the golden age of Las Vegas. Mr. Butera cooked up the arrangements that gave the likes of "Just a Gigolo," "I Ain't Got Nobody" and "Jump Jive An' Wail" maximum impact.
"Louis's ace-in-the-hole was Sam Butera," said Gia Prima, the fifth of Louis's five wives and the singer in his band from 1962 to 1975. "That animal attraction that they had, with  ... continue reading

Chopper Pussy & Los Fabulous Frankies, Opwijk
Last sundaynight we checked out a new band from some friends of ours. Chopper Pussy playing in the Sint-Pauluszaal in Opwijk. Chopper pussy a name that might not mean much to some of you, but it’s Tom Puta’s new bad, maybe we should call him Tompus from now on. Other familiar faces on stage aswell, Steve on guitar, Serge ( or Franz) on vocals, Tom on Bass, Sam ( ex Hetten Des) on guitar and Jef on Drums. The first gig for this new band, but they sure had their stuff worked out. They play some kind of Southern Rock, sometimes more trashier, sometimes a bit more bluesy. But great, especially for the first gig. Serge his voice is excellent for this  ... continue reading

Rock This Town, Aspelt (Lux)
On a sunny Sunday afternoon we decided it would be a great time for a visit to our western neighbours. So after a 2h30 in the car we arrived at Aspelt, a small town in the south of Luxembourg, not really the place were you would expect an event like this to take place. The US cars near the entrance showed us we were in the right place. The hall were this event was organized was awesome, a fully restored old building, it had a 2 floors layout, although the second floor was closed off, a huge terrace, very high ceilings, huge bar and a cocktailbar, but since I was the designated driver no alcohol for me today, I must admit I had a few sips of some  ... continue reading

Ruby Dee & The Snakehandlers @ Den Daak Duffel
After missing out on the Ace Rumble gig and thus not getting to see Ruby Dee and The Snakehandlers, we headed over to Den Daak in Duffel for another change.

Den Daak is the local youth club, so think of a small room, dangerous stairs to get to the toilet ( specially when you’re drunk), no smoking. But great fun and as an extra they served La Chouffe. Man that’s a good beer, but dangerous. So back to the gig, this was organized by Eddie for the first time in cooperation with the youth club, but it was promised that if this gig had a good turn out it would defiantly be repeated. So hopefully we’ll be able to visit this place in the near  ... continue reading

Mark & The Slum Dogs, Whiskey Daredevils, The United Steelworkers of Montreal.
Alright i’m a bit behind on concert reviews, so here’s one that covers a few bands in one time.

First of: Mark & The Slumdogs @ Bacchus café Geel

The first time I’ve been to this place, not a bad place. Looks small from the outside, but the bar is L shaped, with a rather big stage at the end. The interior isn’t much special, looks like it was some kind of pop music bar at first. But that defiantly would change this night. Mark Penington from the UK's legendary neo-rockabilly band 'The Caravans' performing 'unplugged' versions from the 2 top selling 'Caravans' albums 'Smashed and Stripped Bare' and 'Return To Zero' together  ... continue reading
