Rockin Bowl Antwerp 25/11/2006
Yet another great evening at the Rockin Bowl, this event organized by Rudy and Sam seems to get more popular every year.
More and more people seem to find their way to the bowl and the scene.
Dj Guy ( from the Hometown Gamblers) played some really nice tunes in between the performances from Lawen Stark & The Slideboppers and Moonshine Reunion.

First on stage around 21 u: Lawen Stark & The Slideboppers. Second time I saw these guys and they sure know how to rock. Fast moving Rockabilly filled up the bowl and made the audience move.
Songs they played: “Colorado Trail”, “ Blues Swingin”, “ Your Cheatin’ Heart”, “ Blue Moon”,  ... continue reading

Johnny Cash at San Quentin
So, is there enough Johnny Cash reissue stuff out in the marketplace already, or is there room for more? In the case of the new Columbia/Legacy boxed
set, Johnny Cash at San Quentin, I say there's room for more good stuff. This is a valuable addition to the Cash canon.

The significance of the original San Quentin album has always been its immediacy and its gritty reality. It tapped into some of the fundamentals of country music's appeal, of sin and redemption, of violence and hope, of ultimate salvation and cleansing.

You probably already know that Cash's two live prison albums almost didn't happen because his record label,  ... continue reading

The pin-up report: 1,000 breathtaking bombshells from 1900 to 1969
Info submitted by Taschen

Whether you call them men’s sophisticates, nudie books, or girly magazines, this long-ignored art form has a rich international history. It all started around 1900, and wouldn’t you know the French were the first. Author Dian Hanson, a girly magazine editor for 25 years, follows the evolution of the genre from 19th century France through the Jazz Age, two world wars, the breast-centric 1950s to the end of the swinging 60s.

Along this trip into nude magazines, you’ll see hundreds of extracts from vintage magazines from Argentina,  ... continue reading

Concert Review: The Hometown Gamblers @ The Friends Mechelen 18/11/06
We were quite surprised when we heard that there was a rockabilly gig in Mechelen again.
Hopefully there will be a lot that follow.
Seemed that some of the usual pub visitors there where surprised as well, cause they walked out again ( guess they're more used to the electronic music, then some good old fashioned musicians).
The Hometown Gamblers rocked the place again with their old style rockabilly and as far as we're concerned they could have played all night long. They were called back 4 times and by the owner who sang a very strange version of Get rhythm ( luckily just for a few seconds).
Songs on their playlist:
“ Tattoo”,  ... continue reading

Ruth Brown passed away
Ruth Brown has passed away. She was known for classic rock and roll records like Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean, Wild Wild Young Men, Lucky Lips, and This Little Girl's Gone Rockin'.
Ruth started her career in 1949 and went on to become one of the most successfull R & B stars of the 50s. After fading from the spotlights and hitting rock bottom in the 60s, she made a come back as a blues diva, appearing in movies (Hairspray) and musicals, and performing at festivals like Hemsby and Viva Las Vegas. Miss Rhythm was 78.

Moonshine Reunion - De Mops, Melsele (concert review)
Good turnout for a thursday gig, even though it seemed that most people didn't come for the music but just to have a drink with a good soundtrack. I got the impression that there's always a lot of people at De Mops, must be one of the most popular bars in the neighbourhood, or maybe it's just the only bar for young people in that area. Anyway, it's a good pub for gigs with a small but decent stage, free entry at gigs (I think they just raise the price of the drinks) and quality sound system, which should come as no surprise as De Mops is run by Willie "Wuff" Maze, drummer of blues band The Electric Kings. Every first thursday of the month Wuff  ... continue reading
